Chak (village)

Chak is an Urdu word, which means village. In the Punjab province of Pakistan, numbers are using instead of names. The villages are named using a certain nomenclature that dates back to British Rule, all names are prefixed "Chak" followed by a number and a letter. The number is the name of the village and the letter indicates how much water the village uses.

For example in Sadiqabad the villages use water from a canal for agriculture - these villages are suffixed either with P or NP depending on whether the village uses water for the whole year (P) or for part of the year (NP). The P stands for Punjnad.
